The university was renamed by the Government of Rajasthan in 2002. The vision to establish an open university in Rajasthan originated from the observations of the UGC Committee led by Late Prof. G. Rama Reddy. This committee recognized the well-established distance education system in Rajasthan and saw the potential for its growth into a full-fledged Open University.Â
VMOU Distance Education (Vardhman Mahaveer Open University) was formed by merging two institutes, namely the Institute of Correspondence Studies and Continuing Education Jaipur, and the College of Correspondence Studies Udaipur.
